A large and elegant -Scottish (Edinburgh’s New Town) 19th Century Georgian carved pine and lime wood fireplace surround. A break front top shelf with a carved repeating rope cornice moulding with a central joining knot, a central tablet displaying a pair of high relief carved lime griffin’s facing inwards towards an urn on a sicole, two rams heads with hoofs link the griffins by a chained swag. (The griffin is a Greek mythological creature that’s half lion, half eagle, symbolising strength and vision, griffins in architecture where renowned keepers or guardians, equally in representation, is the ram- the protector of the flock).
The central tablet is -in turn flanked by high relief swags of bell flowers with tied ribbons, the corner capitols are adorned with tall urns surmounted with closed acorn bud finials. The fireplace opening has a surrounding of carved egg & dart architrave . The tall elegant jambs that are so typical of Georgian chimney pieces each have a framed border with trailing silk drapes with further folate below, all resting on moulded foot block work. The internal metal insert frame that’s graphite pasted with three half spheres to the frieze is later in period. It’s rare to be able to offer this full carved lime and pine chimney piece of this colour and timber quality- so often these types of pieces have been heavily painted.
