A large inset antique Victorian 19th century hooded neoclassical style cast iron and brass fire grate basket. The polished serpentine four barred grate surmounted by tall brass finials connected by scalloped basket sides supporting a high front with lambs tongue edging, displaying to the centre a cast iron stylised fluted serpentine canopy above. The grate has its original fire brick interior, below an engraved and pierced brass serpentine apron which is in turn flanked by a pair of taller baluster standards with squat scrolled feet. Casting numbers stamped to the rear and on the reverse of the feet date this piece to 1884.
